What is the Difference Between a Med Spa and a Day Spa?

Q The Medical Spa

-by Emily Dory, Spa Coordinator

When you hear the word “spa,” what comes to mind?  Most likely you think of a pampering, relaxing, getaway or a stress-free day spent with your friends or family, complete with massages, facials, manicures, and pedicures.  Now, when you hear the term “Med Spa” or “Medi Spa,” what do you think of?  Many people don’t know the differences between the two, but there are quite a few!  Read on to learn more about what we offer at Q Med Spa versus what most day spas offer.

Day Spa Environment

When you enter a day spa, you may notice the dark, intimate lighting.  You’ll change into a comfy robe and slippers, and have time to unwind and relax before the start of your services.  You will likely hear calming music, and be ushered in to a “sanctuary room.”

Day Spa Treatments

Day spa’s offer treatments such as full body massages, pampering facials, and they may even have a salon that includes hair and nail services.  Most of the treatments offered are great for quick, but short-lasting results, a great solution before an event!  The most invasive, or aggressive, treatment a day spa would offer is a chemical peel or microdermabrasion – designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin.  Treatments are performed by licensed estheticians/technicians, and more than likely there are no side effects after leaving the spa except feeling rejuvenated!

Med Spa Environment

When entering a med spa, the ambience may be a little different.  The first thing you might notice are the bright lights in the treatment rooms, which are needed for the providers to adequately see and focus on the procedure, but also to ensure that you’re comfortable.  While a med spa is not a doctor’s office, it may feel more sterile, and that’s because medical spas work under the medical supervision of a doctor/physician, which in our case is Dr. Vito Quatela!

Med Spa Treatments

At Q the Medical Spa, we often say that we’re pampering with a purpose, as we treat for longer-lasting results rather than short-term rejuvenation.  The services we offer here at Q Med Spa are more invasive; such as medical-grade chemical peels, laser therapy, body contouring, and injectables such as Botox and fillers.  These treatments are performed by nurse practitioners, nurses, and estheticians who have been trained under physicians.  These medical-grade procedures treat a variety of conditions including fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation issues, acne, redness, volume loss, areas of unwanted fat, hair loss, and more.

This offers a brief glimpse into the differences between a day spa and a medical spa, which will hopefully help you decide which type of spa to choose for the treatment or goal you are looking to achieve.  If you are interested in learning more about Q the Medical Spa and our treatment options, please call 585.244.1010 to speak to a Spa Coordinator.
