Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP), also known as a hair tattoo, is a non-surgical hair loss solution designed to enhance the density of thinning hair, fill in balding spots, or replicate the appearance of a closely shaved head.

At Q the Medical Spa, serving patients from Rochester, Victor, Syracuse, Pittsford, Canandaigua, and other New York communities, this cutting-edge procedure offers a natural-looking and long-lasting solution for hair thinning and loss, regardless of the cause.

How Does SMP Work?

Scalp micropigmentation works by applying microdots of pigment to the scalp’s epidermal layer, which is just below the skin’s surface. These dots are strategically placed to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles, effectively creating the illusion of a full head of hair or a closely cropped hairstyle. The process is highly customizable, allowing clients to choose their desired hairline shape, hair color, and overall style.

The procedure is typically performed over 2 to 3 sessions, with each session lasting 3 to 4 hours. This staged approach ensures that the pigmentation appears natural and that the client is satisfied with the results. SMP can be used to address various forms of hair loss, including receding hairlines, thinning hair, alopecia, and even to conceal scars, including those from hair transplant procedures.

Benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation

There are a variety of benefits to scalp micropigmentation. Some of these include:

  • Natural Appearance: SMP creates a remarkably realistic illusion of a full head of hair. The pigmentation is matched to your skin tone and hair color, ensuring a seamless and natural look.
  • Minimal Downtime: There is little to no downtime needed after an SMP treatment. You won’t need to take time off work and can resume most activities immediately.
  • Low Maintenance: Once completed, SMP requires minimal maintenance. There’s no need for daily upkeep.
  • Quick Results: Most clients see a significant improvement in their appearance after just a few sessions, providing an instant boost in self-confidence.
  • Suitable for All Hair Types: SMP is effective for all hair types and can be adapted to any desired style or look.
  • Camouflaging Scars: SMP can effectively conceal scars resulting from previous hair transplant surgeries or accidents.

What To Expect During and After SMP

Before undergoing scalp micropigmentation, you will have a personal consultation with our qualified and experienced nurse, Geena. During the consultation, you’ll discuss your goals, options, and expectations.

The procedure itself can take 2 to 3 sessions, spaced about 2 weeks apart. You may experience minor discomfort, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated, and numbing is not usually needed. After the sessions, you might notice slight redness and mild swelling, but these side effects typically subside within a day or two.

Once the treatment is complete, it’s essential to follow the post-procedure care instructions provided to you. The pigmentation may initially appear darker than desired, but it will gradually fade to the intended shade within a few weeks.

What Is Recovery After Scalp Micropigmentation Like?

Recovery after an SMP procedure is minimal, and clients can return to work the next day. For 5 days post-treatment, you must avoid wetting the area. After 5 days, you can wash the scalp. However, you will need to avoid hot tubs, steam rooms, and any exercise that would cause heavy sweating for at least 10 days post-treatment.

Sun exposure should also be avoided, and you should wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Small scabs may form where the pigment was placed, but resist the urge to pick at them. They should be allowed to fall off naturally (usually within a week of treatment).

Who Is a Candidate for Scalp Micropigmentation?

SMP is an excellent choice for individuals seeking a non-surgical solution to hair loss or to complement other hair loss procedures. It can be tailored to suit various hair types, ages, and stages of hair loss. To determine if SMP is the right option for you, schedule a consultation with us to assess your specific needs.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from SMP?

Results from scalp micropigmentation can be seen immediately, and it’s considered a semi-permanent treatment. The pigment usually retains its appearance for 2 years or longer. After this point, touch-ups are recommended to keep the result vibrant and defined. Natural fading may occur over time, but proper sun protection can extend the results.
