There is a wide array of options available for individuals looking to enhance their features, and one common area we treat every day are the lips! Many of my patients come in to talk about the difference between two popular procedures, the lip flip and lip filler. While both are geared toward enhancing the lips and are great choices, they differ in their methods and intended results, and I think there is often a misconception that a lip flip is a way to “test out” if someone wants filler.

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is achieved by placing a neuromodulator, such as Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®, on the border of the lip, which inhibits the orbicularis oris muscle that surrounds your mouth. By inhibiting this muscle, more of the “pink” of the lip remains visible when someone smiles. For those whose upper lip curls under when they smile, this can help to keep that from happening.

For patients that have gummy smiles, meaning that when they smile their upper lip pulls up and their gums show, we can help to relax the pulling of this muscle by placing the neuromodulator between the upper lip and nose.

What’s the Purpose of Lip Filler?

Dermal filler in the lips creates more volume and has more of a plumping and hydrating effect. This is a great option for patients who want bigger, more hydrated lips. We cannot completely change the shape of someone’s lips, but we work to enhance the natural shape someone already has.

We have a variety of dermal fillers that we can use in the lips to create the look the patient is wanting. Some dermal fillers are very plumping and are great for people who want more volume and more drama to their lips. We also have some dermal filler that is thinner, which is great for adding hydration and subtle volume. Your injector will work with you to decide which option is the best fit for your aesthetic goals.

Choosing the Right Procedure for You

Deciding between a lip flip and lip fillers depends on your specific goals and preferences. If you’re looking for a slight adjustment to your lip shape, a lip flip might be a suitable choice. It’s particularly effective for individuals who have a gummy smile or those who want to enhance the visibility of their upper lip.

On the other hand, if you desire more noticeable volume and want to reshape your lips, lip fillers are likely a better option. Lip fillers allow for greater customization and control over the final result, making them an excellent choice for those seeking a more significant change.

Consulting a Professional

Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it’s crucial to consult with a qualified and experienced injector. They can evaluate your facial anatomy, discuss your aesthetic goals, and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you. A reputable practitioner will provide you with a thorough understanding of the procedure, potential outcomes, and any associated risks.

In the end, whether you opt for a lip flip or lip fillers, the goal is to enhance your natural beauty and boost your confidence. By understanding the differences between these procedures, you’ll be better equipped to make an informed decision that aligns with your vision for your lips and overall appearance.
