Yes, You Can Get a Chemical Peel Before Vacation—Here’s What You Need to Know

Thinking about achieving glowing skin for your next vacation, or wanting to maintain it during the summer months, but worried a chemical peel will make sun exposure a no-go? You’re not alone. Many people, especially those of us in Western New York where sunshine is often in limited supply 9 months out of the year, assume that chemical peels and sunny weather just don’t mix—but that’s not entirely true. With the right timing, type of peel, and a solid sun protection routine, you can enjoy the benefits of a chemical peel and bask in the beauty of the sun-drenched outdoors, wherever that may be.

Why Get a Chemical Peel Before Vacation?

Chemical peels are a popular pre-vacation treatment for a reason. They:

  • Brighten and smooth the skin
  • Minimize the appearance of pores
  • Improve skin texture
  • Help fade dark spots or uneven pigmentation

In short, they give your skin that fresh, camera-ready glow—perfect for those no-makeup days by the pool or stunning sunset selfies.

The Truth About Peels and the Sun

Yes, chemical peels do make your skin more sensitive to the sun temporarily. But that doesn’t mean you have to cancel your outdoor plans or avoid peels prior to a trip or summer excursion. It just means you need to be smart about your sun care. Think of it this way: it’s not the peel that’s the problem—it’s unprotected sun exposure (which is always a problem!).

Worried about receiving chemical peels in the sunnier months? Don’t be; the same rules apply! While we cannot treat sunburned skin, we can treat tan skin, so your chemical peel routine can safely continue uninterrupted.

Here’s How to Do It Right

1. Choose the Right Peel

Talk to your provider if your vacation or outdoor activity is just around the corner. Since all of our treatments are customized, your aesthetician can recommend a peel that will still provide that radiant glow but offer less risk of irritation when followed by good skincare.

2. Time It Well

Ideally, we prefer you aren’t in the sun for an extended amount of time the day after a peel. Give yourself at least 7–10 days between your treatment and prolonged sun exposure. This allows your skin to heal and ensures any initial sensitivity has subsided.

3. Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable

This is the golden rule. Whether you’ve had a peel or not, SPF should always be part of your routine—but it’s especially crucial post-peel. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Daily SPF 30 or higher, even on cloudy days
  • Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Seek shade during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

4. Hydrate and Nourish

Your skin will be a little more delicate after a peel, so be gentle. Use hydrating serums, barrier-repair moisturizers, and avoid exfoliating products for at least a week. Heat and increased activity can also potentially irritate the newly resurfaced, sensitive skin. Following all post-peel instructions given by your aesthetician is crucial to allow the skin to heal and avoid any possible hyperpigmentation for the best possible results!

You don’t have to choose between glowing skin and natural Vitamin D. A well-timed chemical peel paired with mindful sun protection can give you the best of both worlds. Consult with your skincare provider to create a plan tailored to your skin type and schedule—and if you are headed to sunnier spaces, pack that SPF, because it’s the most important thing in your suitcase!
