Laser Hair Removal Care Instructions
Before your laser hair removal treatment, please follow these instructions:
- Avoid sun exposure 6 weeks before treatment. Tan skin cannot be treated.
- Avoid bleaching, plucking, or waxing hair 6 weeks before treatment.
- If you have a history of perioral herpes (cold sores), antiviral therapy should be started the day before and continued for one week after treatment of the face.
- Tanning creams/self-tanners must be discontinued 4-6 weeks before treatment.
- If you have a dark skin type, a pigment control agent (eg. 4% Hydroquinone ) may be prescribed 4-6 weeks before treatment to decrease the risk of hyper or hypopigmentation.
- Shave the treated area within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment. There is a nominal fee charged for any clipping or shaving required at your appointment ($25). Not shaving in advance may also result in necessary rescheduling of your appointment due to not having adequate time to both shave and perform the treatment.
After your laser hair removal treatment, please follow these instructions:
- Immediately after treatment, there may be erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) at the treatment site, which may last 2 hours or longer. The erythema may last 1-2 days. The treated area will feel like a sunburn for a few hours after treatment. The application of a cold compress immediately after the treatment will reduce the discomfort and swelling that you may experience. Aloe Vera gel may also be used on the treatment area.
- Post-treatment discomfort is typically minimal but if the area is very uncomfortable, an oral pain reliever; i.e. Extra Strength Tylenol, may be used.
- Makeup may be used directly after a facial treatment unless there is epidermal blistering. We recommend the use of new makeup to decrease the risk of infection.
- After the axillae or underarms are treated, use a powder instead of deodorant for 24 hours after the treatment to reduce skin irritation.
- There are no restrictions on bathing. Treat the skin gently, as if you had a mild sunburn, for the 24 hours following the treatment.
- Use a mild cleanser when washing the treatment area (eg. PCA facial wash).
- Avoid sun exposure to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the treatment area). Keep the area covered and use a sunblock containing the active ingredient zinc oxide or titanium dioxide throughout the series of treatments.
- Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin. Except for shaving, no other hair removal methods such as waxing, electrolysis, tweezing, or depilatories may be used 4-6 weeks after or before laser hair removal as it disturbs the hair follicle.
- Five to fourteen days after the treatment, shedding of the surface hair will occur and this appears as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth. You can clean and remove the hair by gently washing or wiping the area with a washcloth or loofa sponge.
- Your next treatment should be scheduled at the first sign of hair growth. This may mean 4-6 weeks for upper body hair and possibly as long as 2-3 months for lower body hair. Hair re-growth occurs at different rates on different areas of the body. New hair growth will not occur (typically) for three weeks after treatment.
